New Delhi: The nation's highest court has been rocked by the violence that occurred inside a courtroom, which is considered as a temple of justice. The Supreme Court used the strongest language to convey its severe disapproval of the attack on a lawyer at the Tis Hazari Court in Delhi.
What is the whole case about?
The incident took place on February 7, 2026, when a hearing was going on in the court of Additional District Judge (ADJ) Sh. Harjeet Singh Pal. It is alleged that a lawyer, who was representing the accused, was attacked inside the courtroom by the complainant's lawyer and some other individuals.
According to the victimized lawyer:
The attackers locked the courtroom's door from the inside, and the lawyer was assaulted in the presence of the judge. When the police failed to take appropriate action, the lawyer approached the Supreme Court directly.
Supreme Court's Reaction
CJI Surya Kant reacted strongly to the report of violence within the judiciary's own premises:
"This kind of Gunda Raj is not acceptable to us. That means it’s a failure of the rule of law."
Supreme Court Directives
Taking this matter very seriously, the Supreme Court has issued the following directives:
Delhi High Court Intervention: The victim lawyer has been directed to file a formal complaint regarding this matter with the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court (Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya).
Administrative Oversight: The CJI clarified that a copy of this matter should also be sent to him so that it can be monitored at the administrative level.
Security Concerns: The Court indicated that such violence between the bar and the bench disrupts the judicial process and that strict action against it is imperative.
Conclusion
The safety of attorneys as well as the maintenance of law and order on court grounds, are seriously called into question by this incident at Tis Hazari Court. It is evident from the Supreme Court's statement regarding "goonda raj" (rule of goons) that the judiciary will not sacrifice its institutional honor.
